What is lumbar support, and why does it matter

The lumbar region (your lower back) has a natural inward curve. Sitting for hours without support there tends to flatten or even reverse that curve, increasing stress on the spinal discs and lower-back muscles.

Lumbar support is the part of the backrest that gently pushes forward in that area to preserve the natural curve. There are two broad approaches: fixed support (a piece in a set position, sometimes height-adjustable) and dynamic support, which adapts to your posture as you move or recline — like Steelcase's LiveBack system.

Good lumbar support shouldn't feel like uncomfortable pressure — it should feel like an almost imperceptible companion to your spine's curve. If you notice an uncomfortable pressure point in one specific spot, the height adjustment probably isn't calibrated to your body yet.

If back pain is your main priority, it's worth looking specifically at each model's lumbar support system before other features like design or color. Check our back-pain chair guide for several options focused on exactly this.
