How to choose your chair size by height

Height is the first number people check when picking a chair, but on its own it isn't enough: two people of the same height can need different sizes depending on leg length or build. Still, it's a good starting point, and most manufacturers publish approximate height ranges per size.

Start with the seat height adjustment range: with your feet flat on the floor, your knees should sit at roughly 90°. If you have to raise the seat so high that your feet dangle, that chair doesn't match your height without an extra footrest.

Second — and often overlooked — is seat depth: the distance between the backrest and the front edge of the seat. Too short and the back of your thighs go unsupported; too long and the edge presses behind your knees. Many premium chairs let you adjust this depth independently.

Finally, check the maximum backrest height, especially if you're over 6'1" (185 cm): a backrest that falls short won't properly support your upper back or neck on chairs with headrests.
