Gas lift class and frame material: what to check for durability

Pneumatic gas lifts are rated in safety classes (commonly Class 3 or Class 4 in international standards), which correspond to certified weight and cycle-count tolerances. A Class 4 lift is rated for more weight and more up/down cycles before failure — worth checking specifically if you're above-average weight or the chair will be shared by multiple people.

Frame material affects both durability and weight capacity. Nylon-reinforced frames are lighter and cheaper but can flex or crack under sustained heavy use; cast aluminum frames (common in the premium tier) cost more but essentially don't fatigue under normal use.

The base matters too — a five-star nylon base is standard and fine for most people, but heavy-duty and plus-size-rated chairs typically upgrade to a reinforced or aluminum base to handle higher weight without flexing at the casters.

None of these specs are usually front and center in marketing copy — they're worth asking about directly (or checking a chair's spec sheet) if you plan to keep the chair for a decade or if weight capacity is a real concern, rather than assuming "ergonomic" implies a specific gas lift class or frame material.
